 FAQ's

Do You Sell GT Pro on eBay? No, we do not. Recently, someone was selling bootleg copies of older programs. To quote him, he “had a supplier” and sold at least two copies. He stole all the information from this web site including our logo on the upper left. Fortunately, someone alerted us to the bogus auction and we were able to get it shut down.

What operating systems will GT Pro and GT Gemstones run on? Both programs will run on any windows platform from Windows 95 through Windows Vista*. We do not have a Mac version.

*Why Doesn’t The Help File Work in Vista? Our Help system is old but it does what it needs to do without the frustration of the newer help system. Microsoft decided to discontinue issuing the operating system file that runs hlp files. However, you can still download this small file if you use a validated Vista system. Go to this site to download the file you need: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148

I'm very concerned about spyware and adware. Does Gemology Tools (either the program or the web site) have any spyware or adware? NO! We are just as concerned about these plagues of the computer world as you are. Gemology Tools, the programs and the site, are completely virus, spyware and adware free. We will never sell your email address or send you spam.

The program doesn´t calculate when I use the weight estimator. The only weight I get is 0,00ct. Tried different numbers including the ones in help. What's wrong with this program? In some countries such as Sweden, Germany, Austria and others the comma is used in real numbers (such as 6,29). In America we use the decimal point instead of the comma (such as 6.29). One of our customers in Sweden used this approach:  "It works on NT4 if you go into Control Panel, national settings and change the setting for comma in settings for numbers. The standard setting for Swedish is a comma. I changed it to a decimal point and now it works." In Windows XP open the Control Panel. On the left click on "Switch to Category View." Click on "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options." Then click on "Change the Format of Numbers." Click the Customize button. Click on the decimal symbol field. Change the comma to the decimal point (period).

Here is a better fix. I have copied it straight from the email because I haven't tried it but it sounds like the best way to go about it. This fix mentions GT Gemstones but will work equally well with Gemology Tools Professional. Email us for instructions.

  1. 1-Install GTGems normally.
  2. Copy the two atached files to the directory of GTGems. Normally will be c:\program Files\WJA (C:\Program Files\Wise Jewelry Applications for GT Pro).
  3. Modify (right mouse button, properties) or create new shortcut pointing not to GTGem but to GTGemEU.
  4. For some countries, the user must modify the prog.txt file. As an example, for Windows in Portuguese, will be "c:\programas\WJA\GTGemsEU" (programas instead of programs)

That's it. Of course, going by Start, Programs....will not result unless the user modify also this shortcut, as the desktop shortcut had been modified. When the user leave the GTGem program, the normal regional settings he uses is remounted.

Download the programs to make the change work automatically.

What's the difference between Gemology Tools Professional and GT Gemstones? With Gemology Tools Professional you get all the tools and utilities that Gemology Tools is known for. GT Pro is the complete package for the professional gemologist appraiser. GT Gemstones is designed for the gemstone enthusiast, gemology student or rockhound. It contains the same Gemstone Database that is in Gemology Tools Professional, the Gemstone Separator, the Inclusion Gallery, the same 800+ gemstone photographs, the Unit Converter, the Card File, the Calculator and the Calendar/Appointment Book. Also included are the Diamond, Baguette and Colored Stone Weight Charts.

I found an error in the Gemstone Database. Will you fix it? Our goal is to make Gemology Tools Professional and GT Gemstones error free. We don't like mistakes! If you find an error in any GT product you can get a free update of that product. Email us with your error and if our panel agrees there is a mistake you'll get a free download update of the current version (after we fix that error, of course!). If the panel doesn't agree that there is an error we will email you our findings with a complete explanation.

How much hard disk space does this program use? Once installed Gemology Tools takes up less than 100 megabytes of hard drive space which is very small for a computer program these days.

How can I tell what version of Gemology Tools I have? Click on the Help option on the top menu bar. The drop-down will display Help and About. Select About and an information window will appear that tells you the version and the date this version was compiled.

Does Gemology Tools have pictures of gemstones? Starting with version 6.0 Gemology Tools has over 800 photos of gemstones and another 160 photos in the Inclusion Gallery. Previous versions had no photos. This is because the previous versions were released on one floppy disk (remember those?).

Why can't I see more than one gemstone in the Gemstone Quick Reference? Now you can! Starting with version 6.0 Gemology Tools allows you to view the Gemstone Database in a spreadsheet style or with all the data grouped on one gemstone. The Gemstone Database replaces (and improves upon) the Gemstone Quick Reference. Now you can sort the data (when viewing in spreadsheet form) on Gemstone name, Refractive Index, Optic Character, Specific Gravity, Crystal System, Hardness or Species/Variety. You can find a gemstone quickly by typing the first letter of the gem. You can view photos of the gem, view the Inclusion Gallery or run the new Gemstone Separator all from the Gemstone Database main page.

Why is there no manual with the program? First off, Gemology Tools is so easy to use that a manual really isn't necessary. We developed a context-sensitive Help system which will handle about 95% of your questions. Whatever module you are in (Diamond Weight Estimator, Gemstone Database etc) click on the Help button and you will have help for that module. You won't have to go looking for it. Second, it became impossible to keep the manual current because of all the changes that were being made to the program.

Does Gemology Tools do appraisals? No, Gemology Tools doesn't do appraisals but it makes many aspects of doing appraisal work easier. The diamond and colored stone weight estimators, the diamond cut grader, the pearl grader and the gemstone database are tools a working gemologist uses every day. If you're looking for jewelry appraisal software that works well in conjunction with Gemology Tools check out Gemworld International's "The Guide Appraisal Software" or Quantum Leap.

What's the difference between the "over 500 gems in the database" and "access to over 1,900 gemstone species, varieties, trade names and misnomers?" The Gemology Tools Gemstone Database contains over 500 entries of gemstone species and varieties. However, many gemstones have multiple trade names and/or misnomer names. For instance, consider Ammolite which is also known as Calcentine, Aapaok and Korite. These are all legitimate names for Ammolite (as opposed to misnomers which shouldn't be used at all but are included in Gemology Tools for the user's information). Rather than load up the database with multiple listings of the same gemstone we created the Find List. If you are looking for Calcentine in the database and don't find it (you won't) the next step is to open the Find List. Type Cal, hit the down arrow once and you've located Calcentine. Press Enter and you are taken to Ammolite in the Gemstone Database. It's simple and quick.
