Testing For Gemstones

Many of you have heard of the magnetic response in some gemstones. It has been a curiosity and little more for gemologists.  It turns out this is more useful than previously thought. Following the work of Sylvia Gumpesberger, Don Hoover, Bear Williams and others, Kirk Feral of San Diego, CA has developed a system that is simple, quick and (the best part) inexpensive. Would you believe that for less than $10 U.S. you can have a powerful weapon in your gemology lab. A magnet for less than $10 (half of that is shipping, by the way) is bound to give you the biggest bang for your buck in your gemological tool chest.

Note: You need to use a 1/2" x 1/2" cylinder N-52 NIB neodymium magnet attached to a hex bolt for a handle in order to get the same results that are being compiled in the GT Pro database (version 9.0).

Where to buy  a 1/2" x 1/2" cylinder N-52 NIB neodymium magnet? We have no connection with K&J Magnetics. We only know that they have the N-52 and their service has been great for us. If you use regular USPS mail the shipping is about $5.00 (in the U.S.).

A Citrine Out Of Character (WMV file) - MP4 FIle - This orange Citrine has a Weak Response. We now have 2 Citrines that are not inert. Dr. Don Hoover has looked at one of the Citrines and determined that it is probably a heated Amethyst because of the tone and depth of color. It has no visible inclusions and Dr. Hoover measured the magnetic susceptibility and found it to be below a value of about 7-10x10exp-6SI. This is very weak but it shows that the Feral system is very sensitive.
